While mustered together to support the conservation efforts of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and others at Oceti Sakowin in December of 2016, Mark Sanderson, Matt Crane, Brandee Paisano, Joseph George, and Neil Conway discussed how they could help other veterans.

Sanderson expressed his desire to create a team of veterans that would support community groups by leveraging the talents and skills developed during their military service. That call to action started a journey of healing through ongoing community service.

The team members discussed how they had enlisted in the military to serve their families, their communities, and their nation. While they found that their service was honorable, there was more that they needed to do or wounds that they hoped to heal. So, the team agreed the their motto would be "Healing Through Service".

To support the healing of the members and volunteers, VeteransRespond does not engage in direct actions or confrontations of any kind. During Oceti Sakowin, we observed how many of the veterans were stressed or negatively impacted by the confrontational posture of the law enforcement presence. Further, we observed that among those present at Oceti Sakowin, there were groups who were interested in creating disturbances for a variety of reasons to advance a variety of causes. Working with the tribes, and in support of the goals of the elders, VeteransRespond coordinated with other veterans and volunteers to build shelters that would protect people from the bitter cold. Working with the Akicita groups within the camp, VeteransRespond helped train and facilitate communications of those who patrolled the camp to ensure the safety of the Water Protectors.

VeteransRespond is registering those who wish to volunteer for service in their area. We are also registering people who can volunteer to train our teams for specific roles in support of local relief agencies in the event of natural disasters and other emergency relief activities.

We are currently developing chapters in San Diego, CA and in Seatle, WA. For those in other areas, if you are interested in developing a chapter in your area, please let us know so that we can connect you with these teams as they develop and train their groups.
